: Like in any other short story collection, you might end up really enjoying some of the tales, and not being that much of a fan of some others. +: It’s original, beautifully composed and put together, and a really fun read if you’re into the mild horror genre Still, whatever the reader’s age, ‘Through the Woods’ is a unique and exciting read, guaranteed to chill the spine a few times. Seeing as the graphic novel is being advertised for ages as young as 14 though, I suppose it makes sense that the horror factor of the stories was toned down a bit. ![]() I mean, if you visit Emily Carroll’s website and read some of her online published short stories (which I highly recommend you do – link below), you’ll perhaps get the feeling that her work is often a lot more dark and gory than the more mild version of it she presented in ‘Through the Woods’. In all honesty, being already familiar with Emily Carroll’s work prior to purchasing this book, I was expecting ‘Through the Woods’’s scare level to be substantially higher than it turned out to be for me. Just don’t expect to feel overly frightened by reading the graphic novel… So expect to come face-to-face with ghosts, wraiths, bizarre looking monsters, strange, unearthly places and to see characters succumb to their fears and anxieties in ‘Through the Woods’. Emily Carroll was not coy when using plot twists-and-turns that’s for sure, even if the horror stories might seem a bit cliché as you first start reading them. ![]() The author has such an expert command in the use of colors and shading that she was able to convey in every single panel a sense of mystery and dread, making it difficult for the reader to put down the book until the fate of its characters is finally revealed.Īnd it is quite difficult to predict where the 5 tales that comprise the graphic novel are heading, by the way. No joke, the graphic novel is worth buying for its drawings alone. Through the Woods (c) Emily Carroll, 2014Ī collection of creepy and eerie short stories brought to life by Emily Carroll’s stunning artwork.
